Barrio de la Estación

The Station Quarter, an emblem of Haro

If there is an emblematic neighbourhood in Haro, it is the Barrio de La Estación, which was born in the mid-19th century when the train was introduced as a means of transport to market wine. This was further boosted by phylloxera in France, when many French winemakers were forced to come to La Rioja to replace their wines.

It was therefore not surprising that many wineries began to concentrate their export centres around the railway station. Although there are no French bodega-warehouses still standing today, little by little local bodegas began to establish themselves. The first was R. López de Heredia y Landeta, followed by Bodegas Bilbaínas. This was the origin of the Barrio de la Estación as we know it today.

Some of the most renowned wineries in La Rioja are currently concentrated in this area, including: R. López de Heredia- Viña Tondonia, Bodegas Bilbaínas- Viña Pomal, Muga, Roda, Gómez Cuadrado, La Rioja Alta S.A, Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España.
